Healthcare Professional Frequently Asked Questions
How does Caphosol® work?
Caphosol is a supersaturated calcium phosphate rinse with a high concentration of electrolytes simulating the missing natural saliva. It lubricates the tissues, makes them slide easily on contact, minimizing friction, ulceration and corresponding pain and discomfort associated with these conditions.
The mucous secretion remains functioning creating a very sticky, uncomfortable glue-like condition in the oral cavity, which further exacerbates the pain and discomfort. The recommended rinsing and moving the Caphosol around in the mouth loosens the mucous and helps in the lubrication, providing relief and comfort.
Does Caphosol have side effects?
Reported side effects have been rare and generally mild. Caphosol contains sodium chloride (salt). Caphosol contains 71mg of sodium per 30ml dose. Caphosol is comparable to natural saline solution with the addition of the calcium and phosphate minerals – natural constituents of saliva.
How is Caphosol dosed?
During cancer treatment Caphosol is indicated four to ten times per day if experiencing pain from mucositis. Write for four boxes at one time which represents a four times per day usage (30 rinses per box). This equates to a one-month supply, based on four rinses per day. If you are using Caphosol for the treatment of permanent or temporary dry mouth conditions, you may prescribe Caphosol from two times per day or more. You should recommend rinsing in the evening and in the morning after patients brush their teeth.
Will the cost of Caphosol be reimbursed for the patient?
Reimbursement: Coverage will vary from payer to payer. Click here to link to the Reimbursement section of the website.
Why is Caphosol supplied in two ampules?
The calcium phosphate content of saliva is in a chemically supersaturated state. However, a supersaturated solution may precipitate out minerals over time. Therefore Caphosol should be prepared from two different ampules before use in order to maintain a high degree of supersaturation.
Where can the patient buy Caphosol?
Caphosol can be ordered at most pharmacies. For a list of DME providers, click here.
Are there clinical studies supporting the mucositis indication?
Yes. There have been two studies:
- A Prospective, Randomized Trial for the Prevention of Mucositis in Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (PDF, 156KB)
AS Papas, RE Clark, G Martuscelli, KT O'Loughlin, E Johansen and KB Miller.
Bone Marrow Transplantation. 2003;31:705–712 - An Oral Preventive Protocol for Bone Marrow Transplant Patients (PDF, 40KB)
Papas et al, 11th MASCC International Symposium Feb 1999, Supportive Care in Cancer, France
Can I sell Caphosol in my practice?
