About Caphosol
CAPHOSOL®, an advanced electrolyte solution, is a prescription medical device indicated as an adjunct to standard oral care in treating oral mucositis caused by radiation or high dose chemotherapy. It is also indicated for dryness of the mouth or throat (hyposalivation, xerostomia), regardless of the cause or whether the conditions are temporary or permanent.
The benefits of CAPHOSOL therapy were documented in a prospective-randomized clinical trial demonstrating its safety and efficacy in relief of dryness of the oral mucosa, reduced pain and a decreased need for opioid analgesics. CAPHOSOL is initiated at the beginning of cancer treatment with a flexible dosing schedule based on the severity of pain.6
CAPHOSOL is a safe and effective preparation comprising two separately packaged aqueous solutions: a phosphate solution (CAPHOSOL A) and a calcium solution (CAPHOSOL B). When combined in equal volumes, CAPHOSOL A and B form an electrolyte solution supersaturated with calcium and phosphate ions. The solution works to moisten, lubricate and clean the oral cavity including the mucosa of the mouth, tongue and throat. In so doing, CAPHOSOL facilitates chewing and speaking, loosens tough mucus and prevents mucous membranes from sticking together.6
